Still struggling with Covid?
Help is here.
While Australia's high vaccination rate has prompted State and Federal Governments ease community health regulations and end lockdowns, it doesn't mean everyone is fine.
Many businesses, particularly those operating in the tourism, hospitality and fitness industries, are still doing it tough and in the absence of Federal Government support, could be in for a crushing twelve months.
The same can be said for employees who are facing a year of potential exposure to this very contagious disease and with this, prolonged periods of sickness, even if they are fully vaccinated.
Despite the Government cutting back on pandemic relief packages, there is financial help available if you need it.
The Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment for example, is a lump sum payment to help during any time where a person can't work because they need to either self-isolate or quarantine due to Covid-19.
To access this payment, simply complete an on-line claim form and either return it directly to Centrelink on-line or fax it to them. This support does apply to specific dates, which you will need to check, but it might just help you through.
The various State Governments are also providing various levels of support, particularly for small businesses, although this varies from time to time depending on the situation in each state.
Finally, it is still possible to access you superannuation savings if you are facing a severe financial situation or if you have been unemployed for a significant period of time.
These emergency drawdowns are not restricted to times of pandemic but are available at any time. While this is a drastic step, to encroach on your retirement savings, it is some thing which is worth keeping in mind.
Typically these payments are up to the discretion of the trustees of your superannuation fund and you will need to apply in writing and provide written proof of your financial difficulties.
So it is best to contact your individual superannuation fund to find out exactly what information they need and what the circumstances are that they may allow you to drawdown against your super savings.
Importantly, stay positive. The hard times created by the pandemic will eventually end and you will find yourself in a better place in the future.
