Rest Assured
Recent events in the United States have, as I am sure most readers will know, culminated in a significant sell off in the United States share market last week and this is flowing through as I write, to a sell off in the Australian share market.
As I have often said to clients over the years, these sell-offs are like bad storms that sweep across investment markets from time to time, and for which, the only response is to bunker down and let it pass.
The best protection you can have in times like these, is the knowledge that your savings are invested in sold Australian companies that can weather any storm the international markets can throw at them.
Its also important to focus on some key facts.
Firstly, the most severe sell offs will happen in the US market, where there is a real fear the US economy will quickly fall into a recession. This will only drag investments markets lower.
Importantly, unlike most big superannuation funds, none of my clients are invested in international shares, much less US shares and so there is no exposure to what is going on internally in the States.
There is also no exposure to the vagaries of the Australian dollar, which again as I write, has fallen beneath 60 US cents.
Secondly, while Australia will be impacted by events overseas, I am confident that while the Australia share market might continue to be dragged down by these events, all investments are strong and importantly, still generating income.
Finally, while there have been security scares regarding some of Australia's largest super funds, Netwealth and DASH are reporting NO such breaches have occurred on their platforms and none are expected.
During turbulent times such as these, it is easy to think the worse and let our imaginations run away with us. Over the past forty years, I have lived through a number of these events and know this storm will pass.
If you do have any fears, either today or in the weeks ahead, I would urge you to contact me. I am more than happy to speak with anyone and guide them on the way forward.
Sometimes just talking things through with another person can help.
These are challenging times but Australia is a strong, successful country with significant resources and we will all come through this in good shape.
