Could you be saving big time?
Following on from my post last month about the various pension cards that are available to older Australians, one of my clients pointed out a very good tip during the week.
The Seniors Card is available to all Australian's age over 60 and working less than 35 hours a week. It is not means tests so it is basically available to everyone.
Almost all supermarket chains offer a discount on the presentation of a Seniors Card but Coles offers all seniors 10 per cent off their grocery bill when they shop on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
That sounds a great saving to me and means most older Australians can save a thousand dollars a year or more by simple changing the day of the week that they do their big supermarket shop.
Now be prepared to pull out your phone and google this saving, as many staff members at Coles check-outs sadly aren't aware of it, so you may have to politely hold your ground and insist on getting this saving.
Nonetheless it is worth making the effort to be aware of just what savings might be available to you as an older Australian just by changing the day of the week you choose to spend your money.
Remember every dollar saved is like an extra dollar of income because you can spend it somewhere else on something a bit more exciting than groceries.
